Hindsight Expanded Cinema (work in progress)

I am currently composing the score for a multi screen cinema film,
'Hindsight', directed by John Adams & Produced by Alison Stirling (Remembrance). Thematically based on the Orpheus myth it will be experienced in a semi – immersive enviroment / installation with spatialised surround sound. It aims to centralize the spectator allowing a degree of choice in the selection of events that unfold across and between the screens.

In a contemporary reading of the myth Hindsight takes the pivotal act of the story and explores relations between identity, image and desire centred on concepts of the look in contemporary culture. It examines ways in which the act of looking back draws together temporal and spatial relations exploring the interaction between memory, events and personal records / domestic archives.

Here Nor There at Millennium Square

GPS / wearable technology sound design for public art installation at Millennium Square, Bristol. Commissioned by the University of Bristol computer sciences department and Hewlett Packard Invent.

In conjunction with a GPS based computer system housed in a specially designed jacket with headphones, I have produced a spatialized audio and music soundtrack that provides an immersive experience for a participant walking around Millennium Square, Bristol.
The commissioned work is a collaboration with multimedia artist Annie Lovejoy and its content based on ideas of location and our recent work with artists and singers from Bristol's twin cities of Tblisi and Hanover.

River Avon - Sonata for Cello & Flute

Live performance as part of Here Nor There in Dialogue, July 13 2003.

This composition was inspired by the winding Avon River, which runs from the mouth of the Severn passing through the Cities of Bristol, Bath and throughout the West Country as it divides into various tributaries. It's key and rhythm structures were developed through a Musique Concrete composition composed from manipulated field recordings taken from locations along the Avon & Kennet Canal.

It was performed at Netham Lock as part of the Here Nor There collectives 'where r u ?' ferry trip for the Dialogue Festival at 9.20pm on Sunday the 13th of July 2003.

Trumpet & Traffic

Trumpet and Traffic is a composition based on selected samples of Bristol's urban traffic, street ambience and a three part trumpet ensemble composition.

Individual samples were chosen from over 5 hours of minidisc recordings of Bristol's main m32 traffic junction, for their inherent tonality, rhythm and timbre. As the samples were compiled and manipulated in CUbase VST they began to dictate the notation of the trumpet composition by the various rhythms and tone structures that they resonated.
